Trip Overview:

Explore the Nam Ha National Protected Area (Nam Ha NPA), an ASEAN Heritage Site. Learn to adapt to the jungle environment, sleep and eat in the rainforest using natural resources like bamboo and banana leaves, forage for food, identify medicinal plants, and acquire native hunting skills. Engage in community-based tourism activities such as rice husking, Khmu traditional Baci ceremonies, and bamboo basket weaving. Experience the culture and traditions of the Khmu and Lanten ethnic groups. Enjoy hiking through rainforests, stunning landscapes and survival skills.

Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Ban Prang to Ban Nam Khouy

    Begin with a briefing and visit the morning market for supplies. Explore the Khmu villages in Ban Prang, then hike up the mountain to Ban Nam Khouy. Forage for edible vegetation and prepare a picnic lunch using traditional methods. Arrive at the Lahu minority village around 3:00 PM for sightseeing, sunset views, and cultural exploration.

  • Day 2: Ban Nam Khouy to Camp 1

    Start the day with breakfast and tea or coffee. Trek through the Nam Ha NPA valley, foraging and learning about local herbs and wildlife. Experience the untouched jungle, learn survival skills, and identify medicinal plants. Reach the campsite around 3-4:00 PM, set up a traditional hunter camp, and prepare a Khmu jungle meal.

  • Day 3: Jungle Camp 1 to Jungle Camp 2

    Wake up to the sounds of nature, have breakfast, and trek across a hill through a shady forest. Continue downhill to a stream, arriving at the campsite before sunset. Enjoy a swim and learn about traditional medicinal plants and edible leaves. Prepare a Khmu jungle meal or relax with a swim.

  • Day 4: Jungle Camp 2 to Ban Nalan

    Wake up early to the sounds of animals and have breakfast. Choose between two hiking options:

    • Option 1 (3-4 hours): Cross the Nam Ha River and have a traditional lunch in Nalan village. Learn about the Khmu lifestyle and culture.
    • Option 2 (5-6 hours): Cross the Nam Ha River and hike through the Nam Ha NPA valley. After lunch, continue downhill to a stream and arrive at the village before sunset. Check into your homestay, explore the village, and participate in tourism activities after dinner.
  • Day 5: Ban Nalan to Ban Namkhoi

    Have breakfast and enjoy coffee from a bamboo cup. Walk through a tea garden and re-enter the jungle. View the beautiful valley landscape from a viewpoint. Continue to the lunch site and enjoy Lao food prepared by your guide. Trek through the jungle, observing nature, wildlife footprints, and medicinal plants. Arrive at Namkhoi village, where the Lanten tribe maintains their unique culture. See handmade handicrafts and buy souvenirs. Participate in community tourism activities after dinner.

  • Day 6: Ban Namkhoi to Ban Namlue

    After breakfast, follow the Nam Ha River through areas cultivated by the Khmu and Lanten minority groups. See the Lanten’s traditional clothing, textiles, and bamboo paper-making (seasonal). After lunch, trek up a steep hill in the jungle, passing beautiful forests and landscapes. End the trek with a descent past upland cultivated areas of Namlue village. Return to Luang Namtha in the afternoon by Tuk Tuk or van.
